Human behavioral ecology and niche construction

چکیده

We examine the relationship between niche construction theory (NCT) and human behavioral ecology (HBE), two branches of evolutionary science that are important sources in archeology. distinguish formal models as an process, uses to refer a kind behavior. Formal from NCT how environmental modification can change selection pressures organisms face. In contrast, HBE predict behavior assuming people behave adaptively their local setting, be used when why engage construction. emphasize field is much broader than foraging incorporate social cultural influences on decision-making. demonstrate these approaches formally incorporated multi-inheritance framework for research, argue archeologists best contribute by building testing flexibly elements.

Behavioural Ecology: Niche Construction via Grooming and Extortion?

A recent study shows that brood parasitic cowbirds employ Mafia-like tactics to discourage rejection of their broods by a common host. This may be a new example of animals adaptively 'constructing' key features of their ecological niches.

Evolutionary consequences of niche construction and their implications for ecology.

Organisms regularly modify local resource distributions, influencing both their ecosystems and the evolution of traits whose fitness depends on such alterable sources of natural selection in environments. We call these processes niche construction. We explore the evolutionary consequences of niche construction using a two-locus population genetic model, which extends earlier analyses by allowin...

Human communication as niche construction

Cultural transmission is essentially the idea that beliefs and values are passed from generation to generation. The question I would like to address in this paper is how does this happen? In particular, what is the mechanism? In the absence of a deep understanding of the process by which people come to have similar ideas, a variety of metaphors have been used. The purpose of this paper is to ou...

Human nature and cognitive–developmental niche construction

Recent theories in cognitive science have begun to focus on the active role of organisms in shaping their own environment, and the role of these environmental resources for cognition. Approaches such as situated, embedded, ecological, distributed and particularly extended cognition look beyond ‘what is inside your head’ to the old Gibsonian question of ‘what your head is inside of’ and with whi...

Social intelligence, human intelligence and niche construction.

This paper is about the evolution of hominin intelligence. I agree with defenders of the social intelligence hypothesis in thinking that externalist models of hominin intelligence are not plausible: such models cannot explain the unique cognition and cooperation explosion in our lineage, for changes in the external environment (e.g. increasing environmental unpredictability) affect many lineage...
